Email MikeMike Tompkins is a native Oklahoman from Edmond. He was reared west of Edmond in the Deer Creek community where he graduated from Deer Creek High in 1964 with a class of 13. While early days were spent close to home, learning to work and loving farm life, Mike working for various wheat and dairy farmers in the community, life would take Mike far from home and keep him away for many years. Married to the former Margaret Mae Datin of Guthrie in 1965, the summer of 1966 would find Mike struggling with the call to Gospel Ministry. With no desire to become a minister, Mike resisted the the call of God and allowed himself to be drafted into the U.S. Army in 1966 as the U.S. became more deeply involved in conflict the Viet Nam Conflict. As Mike reflects on those days, it is very clear that God was in control of his and his young bride, Margaret's lives. Rather than being assigned a combat role and sent overseas, God engineered a different tour of duty of him and her. Following Basic Training at Fort Polk, Mike and Margaret were sent to MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida to serve for the next two years in the STRIKE COMMAND, a joint service of the Army, Air Force, Marines, Navy and Coast Guard. Mike served as an Aircraft Crew Chief on a CH-34C Sykorsky Helicopter, a UH-1D Iriquois Bell Helicopter, affectionately known as a Huey, and a U8-F Fixed Wing aircraft. Life was busy for Mike as stayed very busy and taking great pride in his service to our country.
And yet God had called him to ministry. In early winter, 1968, Mike's Pastor, the Rev. Ralph Stone recommended Mike and several other young men to speak at a lay-led revival service at Northside Baptist Church in Ruskin, Florida, located down the coast below Clearwater, Florida. While Mike's heart had grown warm toward the Lord, his will was still resistant to the idea of a full surrender to Gospel Ministry. Mike was scheduled to preach on Wednesday evening and prepared diligently for the task. One Wednesday evening Mike did speak, preaching from Daniel 6 on the subject, "Daniel, Man with an Excellent Sprit". During the message God did a great more in Mike's heart than in anyone else, for Mike received another call from God to follow God's call and serve in in obedience. Before the end of the service, Mike had made the most important commitment of his life other than his decision to trust Christ as Savior. The days following that Revival were spent finishing a two-year tour of duty, responding to God's call to serve his first congregation, Mt Pisgah Baptist Church in Polk County Florida. Other Through the years Mike has served other churches in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi and Oklahoma. Prior to becoming DOM in 1996, Mike served eight and one-half happy years as Pastor of FBC, Fletcher in northern Comanche County.
Mike is in his sixteenth year as CCBA Director of Missions and while times have changed and methods have changed, Mike remains steadfast in his conviction that God has placed him in this responsibility to make a difference in the lives of Pastors and Churches.
Mike holds to Romans 1:11-12 as an inspiration for his work in the Association. Paul wrote, "For I long to see you in order that I may impart some spiritual gift to you that you may be established. that is, that I may be encouraged together with you while among you, each of us by ther other's faith, both yours and mine."
